I've just ordered a liquid multi-vitamin for a boy I take care of (I'm his PCA) and my question is, will vitamins affect his shunt at all?  He's a special needs child with extremely bad eating problems. As he is autistic, he has issues with textures and temperatures. I noticed yesterday when we were brushing teeth that his gums bleed even when you touch them, so I know he is in dire need of Vit C. He does not drink juice, or eat fruits (loves applesauce tho) and we're lucky to get any kind of vegetable into him. I am afraid of scurvy.  He's very small at 12, (and puberty has set in!) very underweight (was a preemie at 1 lb 4 oz so he has no fat cells) and his legs are suddenly bothering him. He has CP also, but is ambulatory.  He's healthy otherwise, but I am concerned about his lack of vitamins. I am sure the vitamins I ordered will help a lot, but will the shunt be ok, especially with puberty setting in?

Thank you for the question,

I agree that he may not be getting enough vitamins in his diet. This is a common and difficult problem in children with special needs. It is very important that his shunt is checked routinely by his doctor-- especially during periods of growth. As far as the question of supplements affecting the shunt, I have not heard of this being a problem, but I would clear it with the boy's physician just to be safe.

If possible, I would also suggest a referral to a nutritionist who specializes in children with special needs. Also, if this has not been done already, seeing a developmental specialist would also be a great idea. I hope this helps.
