Hi - It seems to be flea season at my house and try as I might, I have not been able to rid my pests (I mean pets) of fleas.  I've tried capstar and frontline and they're all still scratching. Any natural recomendations for my pets and/or getting them out of my house altogether? I've heard garlic & brewers yest...but haven't tried those yet...

Thanks

SueFlea

I have the same problem.  Can't wait to hear a home remedy instead of harsh chemicals.

Try flea free.  It is a flower essense that I have found to be a very effective.  You can get it from Naturespet .com.  You can also try soaking collars in lavender/ lemon oil.

the lavender, lemon is interesting. we tried Garlic, that didn't work but for smelly farts. We also tried brewers yeast which has seemed to work (except for different smelly farts). Lavender & lemon sounds much more appealing. I'll give it a go and let you know how we do.
Thanks!

Make sure you soak a leather collar in the oils.  Don't give them orally.  Also,  the flea free flower essence has worked wonderfully well with my canines.  This can be put in their food.

You know I was thinking I wonder if when you wash their dog beds if using a detergent that has lavender essence would be helpful as well?

That might work or you can sprinkle a few drops of the lavender oil on the bed.  You can also make a powder to sprinkle in the bed.  1/2 cup pennyroyal, 2 tablespoond dried thyme, 2 tbs, dried wormweed, 1 tbs. rosemary.  Put these herbs in a food processor and powder.  Place the powder inside your pets bed, evenly distributed.  You can get these herbs at a healthfood store.  Fleas also hate sage.  Good luck!

Did not know that about sage. Question for you Storm 49 on another subject as you seem very knowledgeable about pets and herbs...do you give your pets any herbs in their food? Also, curious as to what you feed your dogs?

Hi Frannie,

I feed them a combination of a raw diet mixed with a little high quality dry grain free food(wellness core or call of the wild) they both have a great mix of meat and vegs, and fruits(blueberries).  I experimented a lot with the different raw foods and I like the Natures Variety frozen patties mixed with the Bravo organ meats and the Bravo Beef Green Tripe.  I have a great store here that sells all of the good holistic food but these can be ordered on line.  I also have a wonderful holistic Vet that i consult with.  She has cured my females skin problems with herbs.  She uses Bu Gan Tang.  I think only vets can get this.  In addition to that herb I give them both cod liver oil and Animal Essentials fish oil.  They get one capsule of the immune Kyolic garlic which has vitamin C three mushrooms and astragulus(a natural anti viral that has been used for thousands of years by the chinese.  I take the astragulas myself and have not had a cold or flu in years.  I started all of this after one of my Weims got mast cell cancer.  I have learned how bad yearly vaccines are fo their immune system and now I have them Titer tested for the antigens from prior vaccines.  My Vet and I are on the same page.  They have known since 1995 how bad yearly vaccines and chemicle flea and tick treatments are but conventional vets don't want to be bothered with telling us this.  Sorry I am getting on my soap box.   One book I highly recommend to you is "the Nature of Animal Healing" by Dr. Martin Goldstein, DVM.  He has a lot of recommendations for herbs and feeding.  Another good book(there are a lot but I use these two the most) is 1001 All Natural Secrets to Pest Control by Dr. Myles H. Bader.  You can get his book on line at pestfreeproperty.com.  Dr. Goldsteins book is available on Amazon.   My suggestion is find a good Holistic vet who also practices some conventional medicine.  (mine wants my babes on Heart Worm because it is prevalent in this area).  The Flea Free Flower essence really works.  I haven't had a flea or tick on them since using it.  Neem oil also chases the fleas off of them.  Sorry this is kind of rambling but I hope it helps.  Let me know if I can answer any more questions...Oh by the way top everything off with plenty of love, they are so precious .
