Is it ok to take CoQ10/Ubiquinol while on Warfain/Coumadin?

My father takes Warfarin/Coumadin for atrial fibrillation - he suffered a stroke 5 years ago.

He also has MVP with severe nervous symptoms.  He was taking statins for 2-3 years during which time the nervous symptoms became much worse, the MVP developed moderately severe mitral regurgitation, and is now progressing to congestive heart failure. His doctor recently discontinued the statins, but this alone hasn't brought any improvement.

I think that CoQ10/Ubiquinol would be helpful, but my father is afraid to take it because it's listed as a contraindication for Warfarin/Coumadin.  I found conflicting resesarch on the subject.  Is there any protocol for taking the two together?

Thanks!

Hi Violino,

I was asked to answer your question. There is only theory as to whether or not CoQ10/Ubiquinol will interact with Warfarin. There have been a few documented cases of it negatively effecting pro-times, but otherwise...nothing. My suggestion to people I know personally is to increase dosing gradually and have regular Pro-times taken (usually every 2 weeks) to see if it will bother them. In every case, no adverse result was relayed to me. Just remember that everyone is different and to make sure he doesn't notice anything abnormal. If so, stop the dosing and contact your health care provider.
