My mom was diagnosed with a weakening of the heart which the cardiologist said was caused by a virus.  They put her on a low dosage prescription to lower blood pressure even though she never had high blood pressure.  Apparently this will help ease the stress on the heart.  This doesn't seem to be working.   Is there anything out there that might help her?  COQ10?   I appreciate any info.  Thanks!

Hiedi,

Sorry to hear about your mom. Have a couple of questions for you though. What is her diet like and Is she able to exercise?

She has always ate very healthy.  She also walks on the treadmill about 4 days a week and lifted light weights.  The doctor told her to continue her routine that it was good for her.  She goes next week to get the results of her recent tests.  Thanks for your response.

Very nice of you to ask.  Well she had a repeat of the tests they had run 6 months prior and the doctor has decided she needs a pacemaker.  Not what we wanted to hear but atleast she has options.  I asked her doctor about the COQ10 and to my amazement she actually thought she should try it and told us about a few studies that have shown promising results.  I take 50mg a day so she has started that and I am praying that it either halts the progression or reverses some damage.  The doctor said no rush for the pacemaker..she can wait til after the holidays if she wants.  I told her she needs to contact her doctor and see how much of the COQ10 she can take with her meds that she is on.   Anyway like I said atleast she has options and I am a big believer in the power of prayer and staying positive.  Thanks so much for asking.

It is my pleasure Heidi. I know first hand how tough it can be when our parents are faced with health challenges. I am glad though to hear that she has options and that she does not have to have the surgery tommorow.

Is she still able to exercise? I know for myself that aside from the physical benefits of moving around that it also helps support stress management.

She is able to walk on the treadmill still and she enjoys it.  I also get her to do some light yoga with me a day or two a week.  She is active in our church and is a faithful Christian which I know helps her too.    I really appreciate your support.  As much as I try to keep my faith close it is still hard to see her struggle with this.  Truth be told..it can be heartbreaking.

I hear ya Heidi. My mom was on life support and our family was being encouraged to let her go. Lucky that we did not loose our faith as I will never forget the day my dad called me to let me know that she was off the ventilator,...it was truely a miracle I know in my heart.

It is very hard to watch our parents face health challenges and yet so important that we stay involved being their wellness advocate. Parenting our parents is not an easy job and probobly one of the hardest things one will face. It is in fact the worst part in my opinion of getting older.

Keep doing the things you are doing Heidi for your mom. It is very important as I am sure you know.

That is a miracle!  I can't imagine how hard those days must have been.   My mom and I are very close and share everything..I will keep involved in for sure.  Thanks again
