Do you take any medications with steroids in them?  I'm 30 and am battling recurring bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.  Turns out it's from my asthma medication that is a corticosteroid.  There also have been some recent studies that the birth control pill may be linked to yeast infections (which can lead to bacterial vaginosis).  I'm not sure on the accuracy of these studies though.

The person I am speaking about is not on steroids but is on birth control pills.   Thanks for your thoughtful reply.  All thoughts are welcome!  I am thinking the BC pills are to blame.

Hi Linda57- I am going to share your question with Lorna Vanderhaege our womens wellness and hormone expert.

I do know that whenever I have had to take antibiotics I have also been instructed to eat yogurt.

Hello,

There are three types of vaginal infections, yet most women are only aware of Candida yeast infections, which represent just 40 percent of all vaginal infections.

Yeast infections are caused by fungus that leads to itching or soreness in the vagina and sometimes causes pain or burning during urination or sex. Some women also get white odorless discharge that resembles cottage cheese.

More common than yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis (50 percent of vaginal infections) is caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring bacterial flora. Many things can disrupt your natural flora, including antibiotics, the Pill, IUDs, hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, douches, STDs, uncontrolled diabetes, stress and multiple sexual partners.

Trichomoniasis, a bacterial infection, is the least common infection. It causes inflammation, greenish-yellow frothy vaginal secretions, itching and painful urination.

Prevention of all three vaginal infections starts with a balance of healthy bacteria and a small number of yeast cells in the vagina - the two components of a healthy vagina.

Probiostat Vaginal (under my brand in Canada) helps keep this balance with five strains of bacteria that help to restore healthy vaginal flora to prevent infection, while also working in synergy to treat existing vaginal infections.

The L. casei strain of bacteria in Probiostat Vaginal is the only strain that specifically weaken the harmful bacteria responsible for the development of the fishy odour often accompanying vaginal infections. Used preventatively, it can help break the vicious cycle of recurring infections.

In the U.S., look for Gy-Na-Tren Vaginal by Natren. It is an excellent product for prevention and treatment of recurring vaginal infections.

Yeast/candida issues should also be addressed by following an anti-candida (no-sugar) diet and internal caprylic acid, oil of oregano and/or grapefruit seed extract.

Kind regards, Lorna
