i'm new to being 40, but i feel i'm a young 40 :)....haha.

I mountain bike, snowboard, run, etc - do all the stuff i've been doing for the last 20 years.

I did just start playing soccer for my company team. The sprinting, stop/start, backpeddling, etc etc has introduced a new level of physical exertion for me. I thought I was in pretty good shape through running/biking/light weights, but man - i've played 4 games, every week, and after EACH game i'm equally sore - and the soreness is total body, not just legs! and it's pretty intense!

I would have figured that after the 4th game my body would have at least somewhat adjusted and the soreness would be less, but no....i'm really sore for like 3 or 4 days after playing.

Any advice? either in terms of products to use, or the way i stretch (or lack thereof), etc?

thanks!

Hi Chettie-

Welcome to the message boards.

Nice to hear that you are still living an active life and age has not stopped you form working out. I just turned 50 myself this year and like yourself work out on a regular basis...usually 5 to 6 days a week. I am not a soccar player although i have heard that it is a great, great workout and as such I am not an expert but i would imagine that your body will get used to this workout but my advice in the meantime is that you should make sure you not only warm up but also stretch after you play.

Thanks Frannie - cheers to you too....I think you're right - stretching after is probably a key, and i'm bad about it. 2 games ago, i did a more thorough post game stretch, and i believe i was less sore than i am now, which is two days after the last game. I just seem to "forget" to stretch enough most times, or i just get impatient to get to the "next item" on the days agenda, and i hop in the car and just go! :)

I hear ya...in fact I just did that today. Forty  minutes on the arc trainer and then I just got off. But I know for myself that when I am trying a new workout for the first time I usually have the same soreness that you noted. Mixing it up is important though and something that is important if you would like to see results. So many people do the same workouts day in and day out and cannot understand why they are not reaching their workout goals. So the fact that you are trying a new workout is great. Do you like it? Would imagine that it is lots of fun.

I do like it...but i'm new to the game and it's a rather serious men's league. I grew up playing football, never having played soccer! but, i fake it, run like crazy, and just try and defend :)

Yes, trying something new is both fun and challenging to your body physically. I need to do it WAY more. As i said, i thought i was in shape, but i know i've been doing the same things forever. Your body obviously gets used to it it seems.

Totally true about the workouts. Plus by mixing it up it alleviates workout boredom and burn out. :)
